First Christian Church understands that the needs of some individuals are best met in an exceptional setting. A team of talented teachers, parents, counselors, and medical professionals will deliver the Gospel using a variety of creative methods, based upon individuals needs.
Shine Ministry Class
The Shine Ministry Class is a program for those between 3 and 22 years of age. It’s a class where each person is deeply loved and given the individual attention they need to learn about God’s love for them and His plan for salvation. The Shine Ministry Class meets during the 11am service on Sunday and is located next to the Playland in room 1105.
Hidden Treasures
Hidden Treasures is a unique Sunday School class where adults with various levels of disabilities meet to learn God’s word, apply it to their lives, and enjoy fellowship within the class and the church. Hidden Treasures meets at 9:00am in the Hospitality Suite located behind the Welcome Center.
Café Disco (Jesus Prom)
Each fall we hold our annual Jesus Prom which we have called Café Disco. Hundreds of adults with developmental disabilities attend each year with their friends, family, and providers. The red carpet is rolled out for this event as the evening includes a formal dinner, dancing while a DJ rocks the house, refreshments, games, prizes, massage therapy, and more. Did we mention it is a FREE event?!
HandPrints Sign Choir
If you have been a Stark County resident for some time, you may remember the Sounds of Silence sign language choir that was in existence from 1983 – 1999. This sign choir performed all across America and for President Clinton. After Sounds of Silence had been retired for some time, Director Sara Yates Heckert and Manager Roxanne Korte were ready to bring back to Stark County a sign language choir and the next generation of signers.
In 2008, HandPrints Sign Choir was formed. They have performed all over Stark and surrounding counties. Today, the choir has grown to nearly 30 members. HandPrints Sign Choir is comprised of adults with many abilities from throughout Stark County. Some are employed in the community, while others attend the workshop or other private day programs. The choir practices signing skills and performs to various genres of music using sign language. HandPrints members love sharing their love of sign language and performing with all welcoming audiences.
Edgewood Baseball Field
This baseball field is a new addition to Edgewood Campus. It is being built for the usage of children and adults with varying disabilities through great organizations like Challenger Baseball and Stark Public Special Olympics. Come out and watch a game and cheer on our friends as they play each Spring and Summer. Many thanks to the multiple organizations that made this dream a reality! Find out more about the field.
If you have any questions about these opportunities, please email Ryan Wolfe, FCC’s Developmental Disabilities Pastor at rwolfe@firstchristian.info.
